The Lady with super vintage 20's painted cover for the magazine..

These covers stand out a mile in the shop. 17th June 1926 it comes from.

The colours are brilliant and it really shows summer. There's been a few vintage covers recently. My Wife buys the magazine.As said many times the drawing and painting beats the photo of a celebrity face anytime. Photos can be interesting But are often just faces close up and no imagination or mood like this above.

Well done The Lady for being imagnative hopefully new artists will also get a chance to design the cover in fun ways as well.

The one thing that I hate is when the flap of the New Yorker telling you what is inside obscures the cover drawing...the picture is much more important to me then the text on the flap...it just ruins it...

All the talent of the artist hidden!!

Spring is here!! A great The Passing Show cover 1937

20th March 1937

I bought this today for £7...the cover just was enough in itself for me to buy...just full of joy and fun..a nice Spring fairy type women pushing the man to enjoy his garden once again...with a lovely bright yellow background...

Inside there are some nice old drawn adverts for cameras..vacuum cleaners..erm cigarettes...lots of men smoking pipes..:)..also there is adverts for the Coronation year...not enough cartoons inside for my liking..and lots of stories to read..But the cover and the adverts are the best thing about it..

I love these witty drawings on magazine covers of the past..
Juat discovered www.advertising archives which have 50,000 pictures...so loads of these great British magazines to enjoy. It really shows the era of the 40's..50's..60's and 70's.
The artistic, pleasing to the eye and skill of these works which no photo can capture. Todays magazines use photos mostly...I feel they are missing out on a drawing visual feast...these covers are good enough to be collected and put on the wall.

Are we tired yet of the celebrity...man and women photo covers on todays magazines...can we learn from the past...
Its time for a change!!!

Covers need to be drawn more part 2 The Dandy

Here are some great clear, fun drawn, different Dandy covers from just a few years ago. The image is clear and not cluttered and really make them stand out. I miss this on todays front cover of The Dandy which relys more on photos of celebrities and an overload of writing. When the comic was a pull out I threw away the rest with the boring cover. The cover does not grab me like it used to. These are just my own thoughts......what do you think?

Covers need to be drawn more

I've mentioned before that magazines in the past had some super original drawn...painting covers..many styles...humour...serious..graphic..moving..
now today it is all the same with the photo of a person (celebrity etc..)which is fine But it makes magazines look all the same. Its not something you will collect...put on the wall...admire the craftmanship...

Comics you would think would have a drawn cover and the two above just shows how good they can be. Full of life! Visually powerful.
Dennis playing bowling is great with the strong colours and the bowl coming right at us. Blue in the distance the cool colour and red nearer us the warmer colour. Drawn by Jim Hansen who has done some great Beano covers...Classics drawn by Ken H. Harrison is good fun and the logo striking and reminds us of the past with the choice of colours.




The Dandy Estreem has a new idea for a cover the photo of a celebrity which is not very dramatic or fun. Also with lots of wording and small pictures scattered around it makes it very cluttered and unclear.
Next time I will show some good covers of The Dandy just before the change.
