Tom Williams comic work..

Whizzer and Chips 12th February 1977

Whoopee! Summer Special 1979
The Bumpkins were always really well written and its amazing how many ideas they got out of this concept. Tom drew also in Whoopee! comic the Bumpkins But is mostly drawn by Mike Lacey.

Shiver and Shake 29th September 1973.
Of course the name comes from Coronation Street. I never liked the medicine mans masks..still don't like face masks today.

Tom signed the cover..thats rare for him.

Monster Fun 30th August 1975
What was clever the kids were even more of a horror than the monster!
Its one of those strips which I found unsettling as a kid But also couldn't stop reading it either. I read it in Buster and Monster Fun summer specials in the 80's.
Its being the one eye ball and all those tentacles..a very creepy strip.I also found Freaky Farm, Terror Tv were in this vain. It was from another world which of course Ken Reids work was as well!

Whizzer and Chips 1973 shown in Shiver and Shake as a one off..
A great idea as I don't have many early Whizzer and Chips I havn't read many..though Tiny Tycoon must of replaced this..which did last a long time.

Tom also drew many Beano and Dandy comic libraries including Roger the Dodger, Dennis the Menace, Minnie the Minx, Lord Snooty, Gnasher and Gnipper, Winker Watson, The Burrd, Desperate Dan and groups of fun folk.

See older posts use label of Tom Williams to see more of his work including his Nutty comic work.

http://www.bustercomic.co.uk/dekker.html
Dekker - He's a Collector
Launched: 29th July 1978

Ended: 16th December 1978

He also drew Dekker the collector in Buster which I don't have.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Williams_(British_cartoonist)

Tom also ghosted many artists in the Fleetway Summer Specials and Annuals..see link for example at Toonhound.

Meet-ups Peter Pest meets Steevie Starr

Nutty 29th Aug 1981.

I like Tom Williams style he drew many Beano and Dandy comic libraries of the 80's.
Great gag with the cat stuck on the car roof!! Also the cat was attracted to the car purring..I love extra gags and story in the comic page..
Tom Williams style often had arrows in boxes in the panels like the yardstick one.

Love the meet up following into Steevies page...a running gag..great stuff.maybe The Dandy could do some fun meet ups as well..
Ironically we have a Star Wars three now with the prequels!
..

Steevie Starr is very well written as is a lot of Nutty..
I know Steve Bright wrote a lot of Steevie Starr and others including Bananaman.

Meet-ups Thumpty Dumpty meets Scream Inn!!

Heres Bob Hill's Thumpty Dumpty..

Whoopee! 16th April 1977
Quite creepy that Humpty being slowly built..it has a bit of Through the Looking Glass Lewis Caroll about him..Btian is a super artist and what a great atmosphere he gets in his work..

Thursday 6 January 2011

Meet-ups Sweeny Toddler meets Scream Inn!!

Whoopee! 6th December 1975
Side panel gag...Come here I'm very fond of beans on ghost..

What is clever that Brian Walker has done he has included the Squiggly monster in the side panels and the strange man that often appears in Sweeny toddler see below..
also the style of Sweeny is in a Tom style..

Whats yellow and swings through the jungle Tarzipan! thats the sideways gag by squiggly..Tom Paterson does an amazing Sweeny and it is hard to tell the difference between him and Leo Baxendale who drew it before..

Whoopee! 1st Nov 1975
Here is that man he is hiding in panel 6...even I couldn't find him straight away..
I feel that story could of been better drawn with more movement and the clocks more animated..

Wednesday 5 January 2011

Meet-ups Sweet Tooth meets Shake!

Whoopee!! and Shiver and Shake 8th March 1975

Love the way Mike has drawn the elephant Kerunnching the Toffee..with feet joined together..

I also like the stone wall which mirrors the punchline of the toffee broken up..

The panel jokes on the right are good But that desert islander acting like a baby is the best reminds me of Tarzan!

Sweet Tooth was of course normally drawn by Trevor Metcalfe...

Tuesday 4 January 2011

World-wide Weirdies Whoopee! 1978 can anyone date these please..

Can anyone dates these gems
..I couldn't wait to show you...so here they are..
Thanks to Tim Barnet..who is sending me these issues to me soon after a price discount..

Meet-ups Scared-stiff Sam meets Frankie Stein!!

Whoopee and Shiver and Shake 5th April 1975

Frankie Stein is drawn by Robert Nixon But the Scared-stiff Sam looks like its a mixture of Mike Lacey and Robert...or Mike is a very good ghoster which is more likely..or is it all by Robert?!!
love this story and seeing other artists drawing other artists characters..and two stories blending into one..just like the comic Whoopee!! and Shiver and Shake..

UPDATE Meet-ups Snooper meets Val Vanishing Cream

Buster 13 September 1975 drawn by CORRECTED Martin Baxendale..who even ghosts a Mike Lacey style for Val..
thanks to Niblet again from the super Cheeky comic blog..;)

Dear Peter

The 'Snooper' page of 13 Sept 1975 you've reproduced
isn't by me. By then I'd stopped drawing Snooper and
everything else so that I could put all of my time into drawing
The Bad Time Bed Time Books. This Snooper looks to
me to have been drawn by my son Martin, who did carry
on the Snooper strips for editor Len Wenn for a while.
Soon after, of course, I stopped freelancing for the
children's comics industry forever, and went off to
create the Willy the Kid books for Duckworths.
And so on, and so on.

Regards Leo Baxendale

Thanks Leo for the correction and the extra info.
As a lot of people know on this blog I'm a huge fan of Leo's work and is my favourite comic artist. Love the Banana Bunch the best!
My heart beated a bit faster recieving that email...:)

Tom Paterson is also up the top of my list which came after Leo...

Meet-ups See Kid Gloves join Val's Vanishing Cream

Thanks to Niblet Its a shame the Parkie didn't know about Val as well!!:)

Val started in Cor!!
http://www.comicsuk.co.uk/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=3756&start=45

It was rare for characters to team up...But it was always special when it did happen..its fun seeing how Mike draws Kid Gloves..

I'll try and find some more from Fleetway comics..
found one which will be put up tomorrow by the timer post (never done that before!..)..Scared-stiff Sam meets Frankie Stein!
