Covers drawn by Mike Lacey the cover king of Fleetway comics...drawing the covers for Whizzer and Chips -Sid's Snake Wow! had Shipwreack School, Whoopee!! had on the cover Bumpkin Billionaires and Scared Stiff Sam and Krazy comic.

The contrast between an elephant Shake and the ghose Shiver is wonderful.

I-Spy by Brian Walker Sparky 1972 onwards

Brian Walker is a favourite artist of mine (I've done a website about him). Loved his Scream Inn in Whoopee and Shiver and Shake and Mike's Bike in Buster and Jackpot.

Thanks to ISPYSHHHGUY (what a domain name)for so much information...
I'm learning new things in comics daily.

Brians work is wonderfully detailed and a super penmanship. Lots of crosshatching. As a guess I can see Brian being an artist as well. Hes great at drawing the human figure.

Sparky adverts and Ma Kelly's Telly by Les Barton

I love this strip...I just love it when it break the forth wall in comics...more the better I say...a bit like a Tex Avery cartoon.

A lot of people say that a good writer can rescue a poor artist. I don't agree an artist can still ruin it. Comics are very visual and need to be very good. This strip is good in both ways. I would love to see this strip back in The Beano...Dandy...the numbskulls has got a bit tired...(little people inside a boys head) bring this back for a change!

Yet again why did Les Barton stop drawing for comics after only a few short years...retirement...ill health...new job...the company didn't like his style...something else??? Anyone know!?

Sparky I-Spy part 2

Nice that image of Mr X running past the window with I-Spy watching outside...also the dramatic The End panel...also very funny the fleas controlling the guns. Sparky was great in this period.


I-Spy sure had a lot of bite.

Lets hope Classics of the comics (reprints from The Beano, Dandy, Sparky etc..) will display a whole story over several issues one day of Les Bartons work. Brian Walker another top artist carried on drawing the character 1972 and onwards in Sparky. I'll show an example of that soon.

Then this talented cartoonist stopped....Why?

He had a great dramatic style as can be seen from these pictures. What a shame it stopped. Anyone know what he did before Sparky and after?

Sparky 1971 Feb issue 316-319 twice

Sparky comic in 1971 Feburary 6th -Feburary 27th issue had the numbers 316-319 -

March 6th to March 27th also was numbered 316 up to 319

issue 324 followed on April 3rd 1971

Sparky made a mistake in numbering the comics in 1971 ...So to help collectors here are the covers with the same numbers.

The cover star of Barney Bulldog is drawn by Bill Richie...famous for his Baby Crockett in The Beezer.

Adverts in newspapers need to be drawn more

I went throught the Sunday Mail and found the adverts so boring...a bit like this one..



A lot of adverts in newpapers or in banks for example rely too much on the photo of an object...or objects...
But what did stand out for me...was the drawn adverts like these 2 below...the only ones I could find in the Sunday Mail.





My Dad was a graphic designer and drew many adverts and lettered them himself...no computers in those days...he was able to draw in many styles. It made the adverts look good and looked like there was some effort put into them. There are so many illustrators out there who are good...lets bring back drawn adverts.....people would notice them...and maybe even put them on there wall...

Wow! perms are back in fashion...

In the news young people born in the 80's are inspired by the tv fantasy/drama program Ashes to ashes ...lead women character Alex who is back in time in the 80's and has a big perm.

The 80's are back in fashion with Mr T advertising Snickers...
The chocolate bar Wispa is back...Roland Rat is to make a come back...

I was born in the 70's so the 80's is my era.....I loved comics then...

Heres a comic which you can see above at the bottom was created by Worcestershire Webb Offset Ltd.....don't know how many issues there were.never saw it or heard of it until buying in bulk on ebay and it came with the other comics.....

Very glossy comic.
The comic doesn't grab me at all....it couldn't have lasted...

At comicsuk forum we've been trying to work out the artists for each strip...which would be nice to have in the contents page of Classics which you see above.....or even a mention of one of the artists in the welcome Hi readers from the editor section.
