UPDATE Ken Reid- Faceache's Dad!

Faceache has a diabolical dream about a headmaster welcoming him at his ghastly establishment. Next morning he’s woken up by Dad who has won £ 75,000 in the pools. At last they can go on that World cruise Dad has always dreamed about. Faceache is delighted because now they can live permanently in a posh hotel. Dad realises that because of Faceache’s scrunging hobby they’ll get kicked out of hotels all over the Globe. He announces that Faceache’s future home will be Belmonte. Faceache thinks it is the name of a posh hotel. Instead, Dad takes him to the Belmonte School for Uncontrollable Young Whelps. Dad is off on that World cruise, leaving Faceache in the iron hands of Mr. Albert Thrashbottom, the Headmaster who makes his first appearance in that same issue. Mr. Snipe joined the lineup a week later in Buster and Monster Fun dated Jan 21st, 1978. However, this wasn’t the last last time that the readers saw Faceache’s Dad: he was shown just one more time on board a luxury liner as it sailed past Mr. Thrashbottom drifting helplessly mid-ocean in his boat after having transported Faceache and Mr. Snipe to Bleak Rock Island for a one-boy survival course. Faceache's Dad had to put up with being unemployed But also his scrunging Son. But I'll add Faceache had to put up with his angry mood swinging Dad! Quite a dark relationship! Almost Dickens type characters..

Ken Reid is a great writer for Faceache.

This story above is quite strong stuff the way it seeps slowly over Faceache the bump on his head!!!

What a clever idea as well! Faceache really fitted in well when Buster and Monster Fun joined. Bringing other horror fun characters. You can see that Ken still drew two halves separately and large to get in all the fine detail.

 Faceache can scrunge 5 thousand times in different forms its revealed!!

Faceache leaves his father to start boarding school and meets some new regular characters the teacher and master (Thrashbottom and Snipe!) Caning in boarding schools still took place a long time after schools stopped! 

Faceache going to boarding school was a great idea and Snipe in particular is a great character its the big nose and chin!

  Heres Matron who looks like Snipe!! Maybe related! The last panel has Faceache going mad..Agh-h! That's done it I've gone! 

Ken Reid is like Segar's Popeye comic strip they both love drawing the strong emotions us humans have and can be very dark. We don't often see characters going really mad..very angry..doing bad things...good black humour in comics.

I will do a post on Faceache's Dad which I forgot to do in the first post. 

More on Faceache to come....its been great rereading my collection on this brilliant strip.

Love that last panel it so strange!

When Buster joined Cor!! the comic got slightly smaller which to me was a shame. 

As you can see the top row is harder to see all the detail. The strip before had an extra half a row of space making all the difference. In Buster this also effected the adventure strips having less space to tell a story.

So Ken adapted and drew it has three rows. He also made the panels thinner to get the extra panels in.

Also Faceache scrunges were more larger than life then before and the strip now says instead of a hundred faces But a thousand faces he can do!

What has been a revelation to me is that Ken Reid wrote Faceache all the way up to the early 80's only then did other writers take over...it happened when Jackpot joined Buster 1982. It shows how good Ken was at writing the strip and with his dark humour. 

Looking at these two different strips and others I've noticed that Ken loved writing accents for his characters..or speech impediments. Ken did this in Jinx for The Beano with her buck teeth making her say th..all the time...like -Hi readerth! my nameth is Jinx's! Another great thing Ken wrote was funny sound effects like the strip above. 

We don't see dialogue from characters being different much these days in comics...like the way Stan Lee wrote for his Marvel characters. It really is a great character device and should be used.

This strip really creeped me out! 

You can really see Faceache's  freaked out by it.. also the strangeness of it ..also the thought of the father is talking to them..which we don't see But can imagine!! Maybe its the mushtooms having no eyes But large mouths make it horrible to look at..

I'm going to have to get some more Buster from the 70's!

Here’s a tribute to the Dandy I read as a kid back in The Seventies. These characters were so well realised by the original artists that it was a pleasure draw them, but hard to do them justice.

UPDATE 75 years of The Dandy The first comic work by Tom Paterson!!! The Dangerous Dumplings..

This was printed in 11th Jan 2003 and has you can see the kid is holding a old Dandy with Korky the cat on the cover..which is from the early 70's.

UPDATE- Thanks to Andy this is drawn by Ken Harrison and the header which must of been drawn in 2003 is by Jimmy Glen. so these characters were tried out by Ken has well as Tom in the mid 70's. I've put up Tom's version above from the 75 year book of The Dandy.

In the Art and History of The Dandy book 75 years it mentions this strip (page 200) which was called The Dangerous Dumplings! and wow it was an amazing thing to learn. It was renamed for 2003 the Doyle family as it sounded like the BBC comedy The Royal Family and with new speech balloons.
Albert Barnes was working on a secret project to create a new comic with a new artist who was a school boy at the time Tom Paterson. What is so lovely about this story is how Albert was excited about this young chaps talent and wanted him to work for him as soon as he left school at 16. He even visited him and Albert never did that for an artist before.

Albert was dead right about Tom Paterson...what an amazing talent!!!!

He thought the reason Desperate Dan was so great was because of his chin hence why the whole family have large chins as well..Well the new comic never happened and Tom started working for the rival Fleetway in 1974 for Whoopee!! Of course Tom came back to work for the Dandy in the late 80's!

One of the great reads in the art and history book.

75 years of The Dandy -Peter's pocket Grandpa Ron Spencer 1975.

Just love how he drew small and what a fine pen nib he used! 

He also used this technique in The Beano's for The Nibblers..,,very impressive.

Jack Edward Oliver also drew very small and his comic pages are drawn actual size.

The Dandy comic online from December the 4th on its 75th Birthday I hope with new material and hopefully with the great artist and writer Jamie Smart!!

 This is one of my favourites and must of been based on real life with his own art teacher. Jamie has my sense of humour..I love zany..silly fun humour.

I really hope DC Thomson will use his talents in some way...he is too good to go..

I'll miss the paper Dandy But really hoping the online Dandy will have new material as I'm sure with old..

But also with Jamie Smart as one of the crew. 

I read the Dandy in the early 80's..loving Bertie Buncle and his Chemical Uncle..Jack Silver..Korky the cat..Desperate Dan..its amazing how long The Dandy has lasted...so on a postitive note 

WELL DONE The Dandy for making 75 years!!! An amazing achievement.. 

We will wait and see what happens when it becomes the Dandy online..the web comic..

75 years of The Dandy- Jack Prout's Super Sam

I love this angle and the way the trees frame the picture..the date couldn't fit in the corner in the black shadows..

Jack Prout was a lot better at the adventure strip with Black Bob...it is unusual seeing cartooney mixed with good drawings...

The squirrel is done in a beautiful way...and the brick work on the house..

Its a shame the aliens still have slaves!! If only they were more like friends it might of worked better..its a bit cold..and unkind..

Also not much alien buisness seems to happen other than he has great strength..so not very interesting..

so not very Super..unlike Black Bob!!!!!!!!!!.

The Dandy 1968

I love the different poses of the spider..also some great expressions on the crowds faces...each different..also the laughing chuckling Punch in the corner is a good contrast to the fright.

The crowd have life has some are running away already...its not just a load of faces with the same shock expression.

 Quite tricky to draw showing a spider run..also great the different running positions of the runners..a good low angle to show the spider better..and the tumbled out of the way children..

 I like the space on the panel Bill leaves...

This has to be my favourite panel..
